Study on the systolic time intervals in hyperthyoid patient

Abstract
The duration of the systolic time intervals, QSl index, PEP index, LVET index, the ratio PEP/ET, the ratio ET/PEP and the ratio ET/ICT in 26 normal and 26 hyperthyroid subjects were determined from simultaneous recording of the electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram and indirect carotid arterial pulsation. The systolic time intervals in hyperthyroid patients were compared to the normal subjects.
The levels of serum thyroxine and 131I uptake rate were correlated to the systolic time intervals in hyperthyroid patients.
1) The heart rate in hyperthyroid patients increased very significantly. In hyperthyroid patients the duration of electromechanical systole(QS2), the left ventricular ejection time(LVET), interval from onset of QRS. to the first heart sound(QS1) and the interval between the first and second heart sound(SIS2) were related inversely and linearly to heart rate, while the pre-ejection period (PEP) and isovolumic contraction time(ICT) remained relatively constant.
2) In hyperthyroid patients, the duration of the QS1, ICT, PEP, LVET, QS2, and S 1 S2 were abbrivated very significantly.
3) In hyperthyroid patients QS2 index and PEP index were shortened significantly while LVET index remained relatively unaltered.
4) The ratio PEP/ET decreased but the ratio ET/PEP and the ratio ET/ICT increased in hyperthyroid patients.
5) As the level of serum thyroxine and 131I uptake rate increased, the duration of LVET tended to decrease and the ratio ET/ICT tended to increase, while the duration of QS,, QS2, PBP, ICT, PEPI, QS2I, LVETI, the ratio PEP/ET and the ratio ET/PEP remained unaltered.
